Look3
The Festival of the Photograph

Look3: Three days of peace, love and photography in Charlottesville, Va. Vince Musi, host for the festival, introduces one of the insight conferences. This year Mary Ellen Mark, Joel Peter Witkin and James Nachtwey are the featured photographers speaking during the festival.

Tom Jones, left, of Charlottesville, and Ken Touchton, of Wicomico Church, Va., meet in the Your Space Gallery. Canon prints images taken by participants at the festival. Space is provided here for a serendipitous exhibit.

James Nachtwey's work is on exhibit at the Les Yeux du Monde Gallery. It is one of 16 venues in town offering photographic exhibitions during the festival. Many will continue to hang through the month of June.

Ken Touchton peruses one of more than 50 photography books on display during the festival that were published in 2007 and 2008.

Joseph, a hospice nurse who grew up in Ghana, takes care of Margaret this morning. Above her bed is one of the paintings she did when she was younger. Her walls are hung with some of her art work.

Margaret is more responsive this morning. It is a big change from yesterday. She follows us about the room with her eyes. Today quickly became a day to connect with relatives and old friends. Calls are made and she listens as her grandchildren, other relatives and close friends tell her they love her and say goodbye. She isn't able to talk with them, but we know she is listening and hears them.

Michael — one of her nephews — stops for a visit ...

... with his dog Winky. It is a day off for Michael and the two are heading off for a hike after their visit.

Mom follows me and smiles when I tell her I am leaving for a while and will be back later.

Self-portrait at LaGuardia International Airport, New York City, after 30 hours and 3,000 miles of weather delays, broken planes, reroutings and transfers, involving six airplanes and my bag never arriving when I did... a travel adventure.

My hometown, Annapolis, Md., from 20,000 feet.

My destination, Indianapolis, Ind., from 5,000 feet.

Clouds, a fascination since my first flight 50 years ago, a presence for life lived under big skies in salt marsh, bay and prairie, bring to mind William Eggleston's photographic study, "Equivalencies".

Dianne, above, and her sister Sherry, below, spent the night with their mother. This morning Margaret's heart is racing. The signs are she is in the last moments of her life. She responds to voices and I think I may have gotten a smile out of her, but she is so weak it is difficult to tell.

Both images taken with a Leica M8.
